Author's Notes - Rationale
By Natasha Nguyen
The topic of which I chose to base my science assignment on was ‘Evolution’, and the question that I addressed was ‘How has convergent evolution helped the North American Cacti of the Cactaceae Family and the African Euphorbias of the Euphorbiaceae Family to adapt to desert environments?’
In this assignment, my goal was to create an aesthetically pleasing but, well researched and informative website on the convergent evolution of cacti and euphorbias, directed primarily at an audience consisting of ages between 15 and 17. The website is also directed at any persons who retain an interest to the convergence of North American Cacti and African Euphorbias.
My first goal was to ensure that the criteria of my website presented the necessary proof, evidence and information, in order to support my argument. In order to achieve this, I first brainstormed many ideas and researched multiple subjects concerning evolution. Once I had decided on my topic and question, I then gathered a lot of data and information from a variety of sources (outlined in my bibliography) in the primary stage of the completion of this assignment. Then, in the secondary stage, I compiled the information in a document and began writing my actual report. Once I finished writing the report, proof-read my assignment twice and compiled a bibliography, I progressed towards the final stage. I transferred the information from my written report onto my website. I also added relevant images to support my statements. When I was happy with the final product, I published the website.
In addition to ensuring that my website was relevant and informative, my second goal was to create a visually appealing and unique presentation that would engage an audience and correspond with their interests. I chose to do a website because I felt that it would be a different approach in comparison to other members of the class and it would be an interesting new experience, as I have never created a website before. I made the website aesthetically pleasing by inserting eye-catching and relevant images on each page. I also ensured to use colour schemes that were visually appealing and intriguing. I made sure that the information was presented in an easy to read format and fonts were in legible colours and sizes.
I think that my website is well suited to an audience consisting of people aged 15 to 17 because it is comprehensive, aesthetically pleasing and engaging. The language of the information provided is at an intermediate level and can be easily comprehended by the targeted audience. The website is also interesting as it consists of many relevant images and diagrams. This, combined with the eye-catching, vibrant colour scheme results in an engaging and intriguing presentation that will most likely retain the interests of the audience. Overall, I believe that I have met the necessary requirements in the completion of this assignment and the website is well suited for the targeted audience.
